This is so exciting!  You already took the first step. There can be so many questions when coming to your first yoga class. So we have put together a Q&A’s list to help you get acquainted.  If your need any additional information, feel free to reach out to us via e-mail or call us at 310.699.4479. We are thrilled that you found us and we look forward to having you at the studio!

What class is best for beginners?

We recommend our 9am classes Monday - Friday as well at the Thursday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 6:30pm. These classes focus on a foundation of breathing, alignment, and basic yoga philosophy.

How do I know which level to attend?

If you are an absolute beginner, we suggest you begin with the suggested classes above, or Private Instruction. However, the good news is that our classes are alignment based and we always encourage you to listen to your body. This means that with the exception of the level 2 classes, most of our classes are accessible to all levels. Please visit our Classes to find out what we offer and what will be the right fit for you.

How often should I practice?

Ideally, yoga is meant to be a daily practice. We recommend you set a goal you can realistically keep. Consistency is the key—it’s far better to attend one class per week without fail than to attend four classes one week, none for the next two weeks, one the next week, etc. The more you practice, the better you will feel!

What should I wear?

We suggest comfortable, stretchy clothing that is not too loose so the instructor is able to check your alignment. Most women wear a tank or tee with leggings and men wear a tee with shorts. Do plan to practice in bare feet. We also ask you refrain from wearing scented lotions and perfumes in respect for those who have sensitivities to fragrances.

Do I need to bring anything?

You will need a yoga mat, and you may want to bring a hand towel. We do provide alkaline water at the studio and mat rentals for free.

Do I need to sign up in advance?

You do not need to sign up in advance. However, if you do it will allow you time to easily find your spot and relax before class. If you would like to register in advance you may do so through Mindbody.

Why should I come to Surya?

Surya is a very special place. Our teachers are world class, the studio is beautiful and the community always keeps you coming back for more. Our philosophy is to foster a practice that focuses on slowing down and listening to your body. Once you discover the proper alignment for your body, then there are no limits to how advanced your practice can become. We are here to teach and guide you with love, compassion and a whole lot of joy!

OK. So I am ready to take my first class, what should I expect?

Please arrive at the studio about 5-10 minutes before class time. At the studio, you will register for the class with the instructor through Mindbody. You may also register in advance. We accept credit cards and cash. Once you are signed in, you’ll be shown where to place your personal items, and where the props and restroom are located. Arriving early will provide you time to ask the teacher any questions you might have, and tell him/her about any injuries or physical conditions he/she should know about. It is imperative we know if you are pregnant or are healing from an acute injury.

We are so excited for you to become a part of the Surya Family!
